Basic Drum Groove
This is the most simplistic rock groove around. This groove has been featured on more hit songs than I can count. Why? It just works. This is the first groove that my drum students learn and it's a great default groove if you are unsure of what to play for a particular song.
Your right hand plays eighth notes on the hihat or ride cymbal. Your bass drum is on beat 1 and beat 3. Your snare is on beat 2 and 4. You can click the arrow in the above example to hear it played while following the music. Practice counting aloud while following the music. Then try to play it while counting. IF YOU CAN COUNT IT, YOU CAN PLAY IT. Take it slow at first. In the beginning, learning any groove is about muscle memory. As your arms and legs become accustomed to the rhythms it will begin to take shape and feel more natural.
