Hi Hat/Ride Cymbal
The Hi Hat and Ride Cymbal share the same space on the music staff. They are written on the same place because they are interchangeable. As a drummer, it is expected that you will know when to play the hihat and when to play the ride.
Snare Drum
The snare drum is written on the third space.
Bass Drum
The bass drum is written on the first space.
Putting it all Together: Basic Drum Groove
Here is a fully constructive drum groove. The hihat is the foundation of the entire groove and serves to hold everything together. Notice that every snare drum and every bass drum fall directly under a written hihat note. Click the arrow above to hear the example played. Practice counting along while following the music before trying to play the groove.
