We all worship something. Some worship money and power. Some worship sex. Some worship intellectual prowess or popularity. Some worship God. But ultimately, we all worship something.
Worship isn't about you. Worship isn't about me. It's not about what I like. It's not about what you like. It's about God. Our goal is not to get something out of worship. Our goal is to give something through worship.
Worship is not music. It is not a band. It is not singing with your eyes closed and raising your hands. It is not holding a hymnal. Worship can happen through these actions, but ultimately these actions, in and of themselves, are not worship.
"Do not flatter yourselves: if you go to places of worship merely to look about you or to hear music, you are not worshiping God."
- Charles Spurgeon
"No one ever truly comes to know, honor, or worship God without being changed in the process."
- James M. Boice
Worship should be a life-changing experience. And it should happen every day. Worship is not about singing songs during a retreat or on Sunday morning, but about living for God every day. Worship involves dying to ourselves and our desires daily and taking up the desires of God and HIs plan for us.
Music is a powerful tool and can evoke and bring people to a place of awakening, renewal, and brokenness. Music is a tool and gift that God has given us so that we are able to give back to Him through worship. Some songs will bring us to our knees in repentance. Some will draw us closer to the love of God. Others will remind us of the characteristics of God and his promises. I believe in using a variety of music from the past (including hymns) through the present. Some of my influences include David Crowder, Hillsong United, Chuck Hooten, Shane Bernard, Stuart Townend, Matt Redman, Daniel Bashta, and Steve Fee.
But don't let all of the serious talk scare you off. I currently lead worship for route56, the preteen ministry at Hunter Street Baptist Church. For the past few years, I have been honored to sing and dance (well, the kids dance...I would, but I'm holding a guitar...) through some of the most fun and intense worship through music that you've ever seen. Before that, I spent two years at a small church leading with only an acoustic guitar. I am comfortable and experienced throughout the modern worship music spectrum.
I am available for retreats, Disciple Nows, and other music-leading type functions.
Available as an intimate acoustic set or as a full-out rock experience.
Also available if you have a worship leader and need someone to fill out the band (drummer, guitarist, bassist, keyboardist, etc.)
Contact me for more information.
